Monsanto, USB and Other Companies Collaborate on High-Oleic Soybean Varieties
On Feb. 28, representatives from the United Soybean Board (USB), Monsanto, Pioneer and Bunge gathered at a “What’s New” session at the 2014 Commodity Classic trade show in San Antonio, Texas, to discuss the USB’s five-year business partnerships to increase the advancement of high-oleic soybean varieties through increased breeding programs for high-oleic soybean technology.

In 2013, through the “Soy Checkoff,” USB partnered on a five-year business plan to advance soybean varieties that produce high-oleic soybean oil. Vistive® Gold soybeans represent one of the first biotech products that would enable farmers to help bring nutrition benefits to consumers – while growing a high-yielding soybean.

“Vistive® Gold high-oleic soybeans are a great solution to address concerns surrounding trans fat and saturated fat,” said Sarah Vacek, Monsanto Vistive® Gold product manager. “Vistive® Gold soybeans deliver an innovative oil option that also provides the same great taste and texture that people expect from traditional oils. And, Vistive® Gold soybean oil lasts just as long as traditional oil, which helps food companies to minimize waste.”

Years ago, Monsanto worked with several food companies, asking them what they would like to see in a soybean oil. After multiple years of research, development and testing, the resulting Vistive® Gold soybeans are expected to be commercially available in 2015, pending approvals.

This year, Vistive® Gold soybeans are in Ground Breakers® in three states—Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Select customers have the opportunity to put the product to work in their fields and provide real on-farm feedback.
